Shining a Light on Shelter’s Longest Stayers

Every shelter has them—the quiet ones, the overlooked ones. The dogs who watch families walk past their kennel day after day, tails wagging in hope, only to retreat back into the shadows when another dog is chosen. These are the long stayers—dogs who, through no fault of their own, wait the longest for their chance at forever.

The Shadow Project was created to change that. Inspired by the adoption story of our own beloved Shadow, this initiative is dedicated to bringing long stayers out of the shadows and into the spotlight they deserve.

For every MuttMix DNA test sold, a portion of profits goes into a fund. Once it reaches the cost of a kit, we donate a free DNA test to a shelter. That test is used for one of their long stayers, giving them not just a profile, but a story—a story of breeds, traits, and quirks that makes them one-of-a-kind.

Because stories connect us. And sometimes, all it takes is one story for the right family to finally see the treasure waiting in the kennel.
